GREAT SHELLFISH BAY

CHESAPEAKE - And so, in the middle of the Chesapeake…he turned his log canoe not to the turbulent western shore…but to the quieter eastern shore, and that simple choice made all the difference.” James A. Michener, Chesapeake

AN EASTERN SHORE TRADITION

CHESTERTOWN, MARYLAND

HISTORIC COLONIAL TOWN ON THE CHESTER RIVER
Few small towns in the United States embrace as many structures of historical and architectural significance as does Chestertown. Its waterfront and downtown districts include at least 60 buildings erected before the Civil War, approximately 30 of which date from the Colonial era. Other structures put up in later eras make this old river town a virtual panorama of many-hued architectural attractions. A tour of Chestertown is truly a walk through the past.
Founded in 1706, Chestertown rose in stature when it was named one of the English colony of Maryland's six Royal Ports of Entry. The shipping boom that followed this designation made the town at the navigable head of the Chester River wealthy. In the mid-eighteenth century, Chestertown trailed only Annapolis and was considered Maryland's second leading port.
A burgeoning merchant class infused riches into the town, reflected in the many brick mansions and townhouses that sprung up along the waterfront. Another area in which Chestertown is second only to Annapolis is in its number of existing eighteenth century homes. The town is home to Washington College, a private liberal arts college founded in 1782. Washington College is the tenth oldest college in the USA. George Washington was a founding patron.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation, the country's largest private, nonprofit preservation organization, named Chestertown, Maryland, to its 2007 list of America's Dozen Distinctive Destinations, an annual list of unique and lovingly preserved communities in the United States. "Chestertown is a treasure hidden in plain sight," said Richard Moe, president of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. "A small, historic and relatively unspoiled Eastern Shore town, Chestertown had the good sense to hang on to what makes it so special. The result is a vibrant community that offers travelers an ideal retreat. Progressive Farmer magazine honors Kent County and Chestertown by naming it #1 in Best Rural Places to Live in America for 2008. "For a county to be in Progressive Farmer's Best Places list, they hold them to the usual standards - good schools, health care, safety and other desirable qualities. But what makes Kent stand out is its residents' resolve to maintain a solid rural heritage."

CLEAN ENVIRONMENT

"When the land does well for its owner, and the owner does well by his land --
When both end up better by reason of their partnership-- then we have conservation."

THE CHESAPEAKE BAY

Maryland’s Eastern Shore is an area steeped in history, with its unique blend of small towns, a cosmopolitan population, museum quality homes, and a safe atmosphere. The Shore lies on one of the largest watershed basins in the United States: The Chesapeake Bay, with 46 principal rivers, and countless creeks and bays. Captain John Smith described the Chesapeake Bay - “a faire bay…Heaven and Earth never agreed better to frame a place for man’s habitation.”

CHESTER RIVER

The Chester River is a major tributary of the Chesapeake Bay on the Delmarva Peninsula. It is about 40 miles long. It forms the border between Kent County and Queen Anne's County, Maryland, with its headwaters extending into New Castle County and Kent County, Delaware. Chestertown, the county seat of Kent County is located on its north shore. It is located south of the Sassafras River and north of Eastern Bay, and is connected with Eastern Bay through Kent Narrows.
The Chester River begins at Millington, Maryland, where Cypress Branch and Andover Branch join together. It ends at the Chesapeake Bay in a very wide mouth between Love Point on Kent Island, and Swan Point, near Gratitude, Maryland.
Its main tributaries are Langford Creek and Morgan Creek on the north side and the Corsica River and Southeast Creek on the south side. There are also several small creeks on the northern shore, including Church Creek, Grays Inn Creek, Shippen Creek, Jarrett Creek, Browns Creek, Broad Creek, Dam Creek, Radcliffe Creek, and Mills Branch. On the southern shore the small creeks include Queenstown Creek, Tilghman Creek, Reed Creek, Grove Creek, Hambleton Creek, Foreman Branch and Unicorn Branch.
